Do you ever look at selfies or close up videos of yourself (like on video conferences) and want to gag? I know I have. I look like some ghoulish version of myself with unflattering shadows.

I recently discovered an inexpensive solution: A selfie light that attaches to either my phone or to my webcam. Here’s the one I have (there are many, many selfie lights on Amazon). I actually have two, in case I have a long Zoom session.

I think that the selfie light makes me look 10 years younger! Or, at least less scary. I can’t believe I didn’t figure this out before. When I got professional pictures taken a year ago, I marveled at how much better I looked with good lighting.

That’s the easiest beauty secret: good lighting

I have found many uses for my selfie light:

  • Better selfies
  • Better videos
  • Better FaceTime concersations on my iPhone
  • Better low-light, non-flash pictures (with the selfie light facing backwards),

Below you can see the before and after pictures and judge for yourself. Don’t be too judgy, though. I’m wearing minimal make up and not dressed up at all. Nothing says “professional speaker” like buffalo plaid, right?

The first before/after photos were selfies taken with my iPhone:

The next 2 pictures are how I look on a Zoom video–the “before” with no selfie light (you can see the selfie light ring on my webcam, not lit) and the after, with the selfie light on (it is on the brightest of 3 settings):

A selfie light was one of the best beauty buys under $15 that I’ve ever purchased!

If you speak online or even just post selfies, consider using a selfie light.
