Do you have a presentation coming up, maybe in the next day, maybe in a couple of hours? Then, the video below is for you. I’m not going to talk about strategies for building content or creating awesome slides. I’m going to focus solely on what you can do to build confidence on the day of your presentation, in 3 broad categories: Prepare, Pump up & Perform.
To sum up the points in the video:
Prepare:
- Know your content—practice from keywords or an outline, and know your opening
- Know your venue
- Know your equipment
- know your audience (know their “why,” talk to people before you speak, and build connections)
Pump up:
- Positive Mindset. Think, “I’m not nervous, I’m excited!” Think of it as an opportunity. Pump up with music.
- Positive self-talk—Replace negative thoughts with positive thoughts. “I’m smart, I’m powerful, I can make a difference.”
- Power Pose—stand tall. Hop into the restroom, stand tall, and expand.
- Transform your perspective: Take your eyes off yourself and focus on the audience. Make your presentation about them. Not you. How will you help them? Give them a gift.
Perform:
Start strong—Never start with an apology. Stand or sit tall, make eye contact (virtually, look directly into the webcam). Smile
Reframe mistakes. Mistakes = something to learn from. Everybody makes mistakes. Don’t make a big deal out of it. People want to hear someone authentic. If you make a mistake, just know it makes you more relatable.
Prepare. Pump up. Perform . . . and transform your confidence.
