The big picture is knowing your purpose for the presentation and your overall approach to presenting it.
#1 Select ONE Specific Purpose (keeping in mind your audience)
Decision 1: What is the main general purpose of your presentation? Pick one (you may include all three, but pick a MAIN one): To inform, to persuade, to entertain
Decision 2: What is your specific purpose? (start your statement with your general purpose and phrase it to include a benefit for the audience)
Example: To persuade engineers that developing public speaking skills will enhance their careers. (the benefit is “enhance their careers”)
#2 Decide on an organization structure to communicate your main idea
- Topical: Most common presentation structure, arranges information into subtopics
- Binary: Problem-Solution, Cause-Effect, Compare-Contrast, Advantages-Disadvantages
- Sequential: Chronological, Demonstration (step 1, step 2, step 3)
- Spatial (parts relating to a whole, geographical)
